2003 was designated European Year of Disabled People. The Weekend Academy was generously funded by EYoDP to offer summer schools for disabled people, and to host two residencies for disabled artists. Sculptor Lynn Cox and painter-printmaker Nancy Willis undertook the residencies at Byam Shaw, and each led a week-long summer school. Participants exhibited their work in the Concourse Gallery at Byam Shaw at the end of each week. Cox and Willis exhibited work developed during their residencies as part of Xposure 2003, London’s disability arts festival.

The Weekend Academy’s Saturday Studio, led by Nancy Willis, developed from the experience of the summer schools, and from participants’ requests for a welcoming space to develop their drawing and printmaking further.

“The tutors and staff were brilliant and it was a very nice, uncompetitive atmosphere with a wide range of interesting people. I thought it was well run, fun and highly successful.”
